Is Professional Air Duct Cleaning Worth the Expense? In Spring on March 17, 2014 at 8:49 pm | Written by admin
We have all heard of air duct cleaning scams in which companies are accused of charging for air duct cleaning services that have had little to no affect but findings from the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) show that there are in fact benefits to having your air ducts professionally cleaned. The main benefits of a professional air duct cleaning include better air quality which is beneficial for allergy sufferers and better efficiency within the air duct system for lower heating and cooling bills.
According to a 1997 brochure from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), no scientific evidence can support that professional air duct cleanings improve the air quality of a home. This brochure may be over 15 years old by now but senior scientist in the EPA Indoor Environments Division Laureen Burton claims that the EPA still stands by the brochure. She claims that changing filters and regular system maintenance are more important than air duct cleanings.
However, it seems as if the EPA still sees some value in air duct cleanings as NADCA claims to agree with all of the EPA’s findings regarding air duct cleaning except how often it should happen. The EPA recommends that air ducts should only be cleaned as needed in instances of mold or excessive debris in the system while NADCA experts believe the need for air duct cleaning depends on a number of factors such as pets, smoking, renovations, weather conditions, and overall cleanliness of the home.
The air duct cleaning standards set by NADCA go much further than just sweeping the ducts to cover the components of the system as well such as the coils and the central system. A deep cleaning of the system will keep these components functioning properly which could also lead to better long-term energy efficiency. According to studies done by Bob Barker and Ross Montgomery for the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, dirty coils and blowers may reduce the efficiency in commercial buildings by up to 40 percent.
